I personally think University of KwaZulu Natal should be number 3
April 22, 2008 at 11:52 am
I at the University of Cape Town and I would like to agree with Mfundo UKZN should be position 3.
1. UCT
2. WITS
3. UKZN
4. UP
5. CARIO UNIVERSITY
6. STELLENBOSCH UNIVERSITY
7. RHODES
8. UNIVERSITY OF FREE STATE
9. UNIVERSITY OF WESTERN CAPE
10.UNIVERSITE DE LA REUNION

UKZN is a “black” institution, I am not sure about it being position 3, or is it because you Mbali Tenza and Mfundo Sabelo Nkosi you are blacks yourself. UKZN still needs a lot of transformation. It fails to equip students with necessary skills to face the corporate world out there. Have you checked at its performance in disciplines of Accounting, Law and Engineering. It is still under transformation…

The goals of the University of KwaZulu Natal are to:
Promote access to learning that will expand educational and employment opportunities for the historically disadvantaged, and support social transformation and redress.
Create and develop an enabling environment for all learners and scholars to pursue their studies in accordance with the principles of academic freedom.
Advance knowledge and culture through globally competitive teaching, learning, scholarship and research, innovation and scientific investigation.
Foster a capacity for independent critical thinking, free engagement in fundamental discovery and a reappraisal and extension of traditional views of the world amongst students and staff.
Support and contribute, across the academic enterprise, to national and regional development, and the welfare and upliftment of the wider community.
Provide holistic education which promotes an awareness of social responsibility and sound ethical practice in a diverse society.
Promote and foster tolerance and respect for multilingualism, diverse cultures and social values.
Promote excellence in teaching and learning through creative and innovative curriculum design and development, pedagogical strategies and assessment practices in accordance with sound quality assurance principles.
Strengthen the institution through local and international collaboration, exchanges and partnerships with the private sector and higher education institutions in teaching, research and development enterprises.
Conserve the physical environment, and foster a culture of responsible, ethical, sustainable use of natural resources.
Increase opportunities for lifelong learning in response to the educational, social, political, scientific and economic challenges of our time.
Equip graduates to serve as future leaders of the nation.
Ensure effective governance through democratic representation, accountability, and transparency.
Promote the social and personal well-being of staff and students, and foster the realization of their full human potential.
The University views this vision and mission statement as a reflection of its core values and commitments. In carrying out its various activities, the University seeks to contribute to the building of a just South African society.
The University is only 4 years old and it is a merger of two universities of way too extreme levels i.e UDW and Natal University. It is still on transformation yet it produces people who are ready for the jungle out there, equipped with necessary skills to face the corporate arena is just an assumption, do your research duly Sir before making any insubstantial conclusions. UKZN is the university of choice. And bear it in mind that UCT, WITS, RHODES and Stellenbosch University never merged hence they are still on par with their historic standards. UKZN is soon to be the best University in Africa at large, just do your research and follow its improvement and stop being racist Mr. Summerton.
April 22, 2008 at 12:25 pm
Erratum: In the line that reads: “… with necessary skills to face the corporate arena is just an ussumption…” eliminate “is just an assumption” The line should read thus: “It is still on transformation yet it produces people who are ready for the jungle out there, equipped with necessary skills to face the corporate arena…” Thanks

if the rankings are based on institutions that provide excellent and quality education in areas of study that are relevant to the demand of modern developmental and research, then these rantings must seriously be reconsidered. Universities like university of Ghana and university of Cairo are both acclaimed Continentaly and globally as one of the best on the face of the continent and this is evident even in the heavy presence of foreign students and facilities available to students lecturers and reserchers

The school ranked 55 isn’t Awolowo University. It is Obafemi Awolowo University. I will like to know the criteria for the selection, so I can be convinced that the process is credible.

Guys we can argue all we like but the fact is that WITS is the best university in Africa and should be in position 1.People who rate these African universities always under rate WITS in favour of UCT and honestly that is cruel and keep in mind that I’m not saying this because I’m a WITSIE
June 2, 2009 at 4:47 am
Substantiate your comment…what makes WITS better than UCT??? Give facts!
August 25, 2008 at 9:15 am
Kgotso, Wits it is a best institution but let us be honest, UCT is the best. I did my 1st year BCom at University of Fort Hare in 1995 and took a transfer to UCT where I thought of changing from BCom to BA majoring with Economics and Law. After three years I transfered to WITS where I completed my BA degree in 1999. I am aware of the standard in each of these institutions: Wits and UCT. UCT is the best. After working for government for three years in 2004 I enrolled for LLB at University of Durban-Westville(UDW) which changed to University of KwaZulu Natal(UKZN) in that very year following a merger with the “white” institution University of Natal. As far as I am concerned UDW offered best Law education even more than University of Natal, Wits and UCT. I don`t understand Samuel Summerton when he says UKZN is the “black” institution, do your research Sir, UKZN is an institution of all races found at all 5 different campuses, you should know your story. Mfundo Sabelo Nkosi is true, UKZN should be positioned at the third place of the ranking. That is one best institution.

It is very ridiculous that the University of Benin that was rated as Commonwealth 2nd best University barely two years ago, is not even rated among the best 10 in Africa. It think the ranking should be more properly.

I am a kenyan and would like you to stop making racial comments about University rankings. Here in Kenya that is crap. Evaluation should be based on quality on carefully researched parameters and not based on rumours and protests. University of Nairobi is far much better than position 23. I have a feeling its south Africans who are doing the ranking.

I have had the priveledge of studying for Master degree in Public health at the university of Pretoria and for Master degree in Family Medicine (Family Medicine) at the university of Kwazulu Natala. If I compare the 2 in term of quality of teaching, infrastructure, quality of lecturers, Number of student, publishable researches, etc. I found if very strange for one to suggest that university of Kwazulu Natal should be ranked number 3. this is not conceivable. Could please published the criteria used and scores for each of these universities per criteria.
thank you
Dr. Polycarpe N. Makinga
MB.ChB, Dip Obst (SA), MPH (Pretoria), MMedFamMed (UKZN)

November 12, 2008 at 5:27 am
is this top south african universities or top african univerities?
November 28, 2008 at 11:21 am
The criteria for the ranking must be transparent. University of Benin, Nigeria deserves to be amongst the first 20 in Africa.
December 11, 2008 at 10:00 pm
i think this rating is not as accurate as it portrays.I know as a matter of fact that university of ghana is among the best five universties in africa.pls may i know the standard u used in ur ratings.
December 12, 2008 at 1:58 pm
i think this issue called for re-think,before you can conclud on this rating i think the criteria must also be listed . no university of technology in nigeria is part of the rating,i think you people still need to do great research on you part
January 6, 2009 at 12:43 pm
Come on people, I don’t see anything wrong with the rankings.Let’s face it, South Africa is the best country when it comes to resources, infrastructure and everything that goes with it;it’s no wonder the best universities in Africa are found here.Lastly,I completely agree with Mfundo Sabelo Nkosi when he says UKZN should be at top 3 in Africa.

i have had a privilage to be enrolled in quite a number of these institutions, i would say i agree with part of the ratings, UCT tops. But at the same time it depends on the schools in these universities for instance everyone knows that Rhodes U. offers the best school for journalism, UCT best school of medicine but it used to be University of Natal Durban before the merger, Wits best school of engineering especial electrical, uct (chemical) and so on… on UKZN being number 3, I doubt it, if you had said UND i would have agreed but I don’ think so now. Stellebosch and UP deserve to be in top 10, Nelson Mandela M.U doesn’t deserve to be in top 50, when Nkwame N. UST , NUST from ZIm, U.Ghana are not even on the list.
February 12, 2009 at 9:02 pm
why should south african universities av no place amongst world’s 1-30 if they can be as much as this on Africa’s ranking
February 13, 2009 at 5:52 pm
I think Regional Maritime University, Accra-Ghana should be included.
February 23, 2009 at 3:29 pm
the Regional Maritime University shouldn’t be letf out in the ratings because it is one of the best maritime institutions in the world and also the best in afirca.

June 9, 2009 at 7:14 am
i think nelson mandela metropolitan university is the best after all.
June 19, 2009 at 4:15 am
I’m sorry that Addis Ababa University (AAU) of Ethiopia is not included in the list. In my opinion it definitely be among the top ten universities in Africa.
On March 20, 1950, Emperor Haile Silassie I declared the foundation of the University College of Addis Ababa, which includes the faculties of Arts and Science. It was renamed Haile Selassie I University in 1962 and then Addis Ababa University in 1975. At the time there were only 33 students enrolled compared to the current number of more than 400,000 students.Starting from only one diploma and certificate granting department, namely Biology, the University today comprises more than 25 faculties.
